LEADING THE TEAM
Matthew Davis, lead engineer & designer of Articulated Artworks, is an accomplished designer, engineer, artist, fabricator, and educator based in the greater New York area. With over two decades of experience, he has established a reputation for creating immersive kinetic environments, sculptures, and products in collaboration with talented artists and designers.
For larger projects, Matthew is typically brought on board to serve as a kinetic designer to help advance the top level creative vision of the project while also coordinating heavily with other team members such as lighting/video/structural/automation to ensure an exciting, reliable, and safe experience.
Articulated Artworks was founded to address the need for executing projects with more modest budgets, primarily for artists and designers. In these projects, AA serves as a mechanical designer but can also contribute as a fabricator and installer, helping to bring the creative intent of the artist to life while leveraging Matthew's diverse design and engineering skills.
From 2016 to 2019, Matthew taught a course in kinetic design at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture Preservation & Planning (GSAPP). This course explored the theories of incorporating movement into objects and environments, providing students with a deeper understanding of the design and engineering aspects of creating kinetic art.
In addition to designing and fabricating long-term projects for clients, Matthew indulges his inner child by building special effects rigs and robots for motion control filming. Together with his talented food stylist wife, Charlotte Omnès, they operate Rigs for Gigs, a company specializing in custom special FX rigs for motion control film shooting. So, pull back the curtain and witness the wizards in action as they fling, bounce, pour, and spin their way through the day on a commercial photo shoot.
