Big Pollinator

Burning Man - 2018

Artist - Jakob Bokulich

Role – Design & Engineering

Conceived as a kinetic sculptural installation for Burning Man 2018 by artist Jakob Bokulich, we were able to convert his conceptual sketches into three-dimensional reality and provide all fabrication documentation to a team of dedicated volunteers.  Twenty-four plywood gears weighing 2,400 lbs were suspended above participants by a custom steel structure. By manually turning a central floor mounted winch, users could physically rotate the gears. Combined with a custom lighting system, the effect of looking up at the gears while spinning was mesmerizing.  Big Pollinator was triumphantly set ablaze at the end of the event after replacing the winch with a cable system allowing the team to operate the sculpture from a safe distance while the piece was fully engulfed in flames.
