Olympic Arch Medals Plaza

Salt Lake City, 2002

Artist - Chuck Hoberman

Stage Design – Steve Bass

Fabrication – Scenic Technologies

Structural Engineering – Buro Happold

Role – Mechanical Design

The Hoberman Arch is a 72 ft wide mechanical iris that was incorporated into the Olympic Medals Plaza for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics. It retracted to reveal the podium where most of the Olympic medals were awarded.  We helped rationalize the creative vision of both the artist and stage designer into a full set of fabrication drawings.  This highly technical process involved very close coordination with a talented group of structural engineers to insure safe and smooth operation for the duration of the event.  The Hoberman Arch is now installed at the Salt Lake City International Airport and welcomes all visitors as they depart the facilities.
